Henry Carey
Henry Carey 1687–1743, English author. After the first collection of his poems appeared in 1713, he turned to writing for the stage. Primarily a writer of farce comedy, his greatest success was Chrononhotonthologos (1734), a burlesque on theatrical bombast. He is best remembered, however, for his songs, in particular the ballad "Sally in Our Alley." |

Carey, Henry
Carey, Henry (?1687–1743), is remembered as the author of Chrononhotonthologos, as the inventor of the nick-name ‘Namby-Pamby’ for Ambrose Philips, and as the author of the words and music of ‘Sally in our Alley’. His burlesque opera The Dragon of Wantley was performed with much success in 1737.

Carey, Henry
Carey, Henry (b ?Yorkshire, c.1690; d Clerkenwell, 1743). Eng. composer, poet, and playwright. Wrote successful burlesques of It. opera and cantatas between 1729 and 1737, several being perf. at Drury Lane. His songs incl. ‘Sally in our alley’ c.1715 (of which he also wrote the words).
