Helsinki
Helsinki (Swedish: Helsingfors), Finland The Swedish fors means ‘waterfall’, a reference to the falls at the original site of the city at the mouth of the River Vantaa, some 3 miles (5 km) north of its present location which has better access to the sea. Helsing comes from Helsingi, a tribal name. Helsinki is the Finnish version of the Swedish name. The city was founded in 1550 by Gustav I Vasa (c.1496–1560), King of Sweden (1523–60), as Helsingfors and moved in 1640. Three years after Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland was moved to Helsinki and it has remained the capital of Finland ever since.
