Hegira
Hegira or Hejira [Ar.,= Hijra =breaking off of relations], the departure of the prophet Muhammad from Mecca in Sept., 622. Muhammad was a monotheist and preached against the polytheism of the Meccan religion. This aroused the hostility of the merchant leaders of his native city, who derived much of their wealth from pilgrimages to Mecca and its surrounding cities. Forced to flee from his enemies, Muhammad went to Yathrib (later renamed Medina ), where he became ruler. The Muslim era is dated from the first day (July 16, 622, in the Western calendar) of the lunar year in which the Hegira took place, and the abbreviation descr='[AH]' is used with that year (descr='[AH]' 1) and subsequent years. |

He·gi·ra / hiˈjīrə; ˈhejərə/ (also He·ji·ra or Hij·ra / ˈhijrə/ ) • n. Hegira
Hegira Muhammad's departure from Mecca to Medina in ad 622, prompted by the opposition of the merchants of Mecca and marking the consolidation of the first Muslim community. The name comes (via medieval Latin) from Arabic hijra ‘departure’, from hajara ‘emigrate’.
The abbreviation AH (from Latin anno Hegirae) means ‘in the year of the Hegira’, and is used in the Muslim calendar for reckoning years from the departure from Mecca. |

hegira (Arabic hijra, ‘exodus’, ‘migration’, or ‘breaking of ties’) MUHAMMAD's secret departure from MECCA in 622, accompanied by ABU BAKR, to live among the people of Yathrib, later called Medina, thus founding the first Muslim community. Under the second caliph, Umar, this key event in the history of Islam was chosen as the starting-point for the Muslim calendar.
