Greer

Greer

Greer, US destroyer which was attacked by a U-boat 200 km. (125 mi.) south-west of Iceland on 4 September 1941. She was not damaged, but Roosevelt called the attack ‘piracy’ and warned that if any German or Italian warships entered waters being protected by the US Navy they did so at their own risk. This ended the US Navy's predicament of trying to protect large stretches of water during the battle of the Atlantic without having the authority to shoot, and from that time Germany and the US were opponents in a de facto war there.
