White, Gilbert (1720–93), spent most of his life as curate of Selborne. He began in 1751 to keep a ‘Garden Kalendar’ and later a ‘Naturalist's Journal’. He made the acquaintance of two distinguished naturalists, Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington, with whom he carried on a correspondence from 1767 which formed the basis of his classic Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (pub. Dec. 1788, title page 1789), a work which displays his affectionate and detailed observations of wild life and nature, and his love of the picturesque in landscape.
