German measles

German measles (jer-măn) n. a mild highly contagious virus infection, mainly of childhood. Symptoms include headache, sore throat, and slight fever, followed by swelling and soreness of the neck and the eruption of a rash of minute pink spots, spreading from the face and neck to the rest of the body. German measles can cause fetal malformations during early pregnancy. Medical name: rubella. Compare scarlet fever.

German measles (rubella) Viral disease usually contracted in childhood. Symptoms include a sore throat, slight fever and pinkish rash. Women developing rubella during the first three months of pregnancy risk damage to the fetus. Immunization is recommended for girls who have not had the disease.
