George Bentham

George Bentham , 1800-1884, one of the greatest of English systematic botanists; nephew of Jeremy Bentham. He wrote Handbook of British Flora (1858) and, with W. J. Hooker, Genera Plantarum (1862-83), as well as handbooks on the flora of several British possessions including a seven volume flora of Australia. He also produced global studies of several major plant families in the latter part of the 19th cent.

Bentham, George (1800–84)A British botanist, the nephew of the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham for whom he worked as secretary (1826–32), who prepared the Flora Hongkongensis (1861), seven volumes of the Flora Australiensis (1863–78), and what is considered his most important work, three volumes of Genera Plantarum, in collaboration with J. D.Hooker (1862–83). His Handbook of the British Flora was first published in 1858, and its seventh edition in 1924 (the fifth and sixth editions were prepared by Hooker).
