Stock, Frederick (August)
Stock, Frederick (August) (b Jülich, Prussia, 1872; d Chicago, 1942). Ger.-born conductor, violinist, and composer (Amer. cit. 1919). Violinist in Cologne orch. 1891–5. Went to USA as violist in Theodore Thomas Orch., 1895. Became ass. cond. to Thomas 1901, succeeding him 1905 and remaining cond. until his death (orch. became Chicago SO 1912). Gave f.p. of several Amer. works and introduced many modern works to Amer. audiences. Commissioned Walton's Scapino ov., 1940. Wrote 2 syms., vn. conc., chamber mus., etc.

Frederick Stock
Frederick Stock (Friedrich Wilhelm August Stock) , 1872–1942, German-American conductor and composer. He came to the United States in 1895 as a violist in the Chicago Orchestra and became (1899) assistant conductor. As permanent conductor from 1905 until his death, Stock was responsible for the many premieres of new works. His own compositions include songs, orchestral works, and chamber music. |
