Fort Orange
Fort Orange a fortification that was the first Dutch foothold in America. It was first built in 1613 on Castle Island on the Hudson River, near what is now Albany. It began as a small redoubt called Fort Nassau, probably built on a French foundation dating to 1540, and was rebuilt in 1616 after a flood. By 1624, the building was deserted and neglected, and Dutch colonists under the aegis of the Dutch East India Company rebuilt and settled it, this time calling it Fort Orange. It was reduced to a trading post after the settlement of Manhattan in 1626. In 1664, at the fall of New Netherland to the English, the fort was occupied by the English and renamed Fort Albany.

Fort Albany
Fort Albany Canadian fur-trading post, N Ont., at the mouth of the Albany River on James Bay. It was founded (before 1682) by the Hudson's Bay Company as one of its earliest forts. In the Anglo-French struggle for the Hudson Bay trade, Fort Albany was taken by the French in 1686. It was recaptured by the British in 1693 and from 1697 to 1713 was the only post of the region in the British company's possession. It has continued as an important fur-trading post. |
