Farouk , 1920-65, king of Egypt (1936-52), son and successor of Fuad I. After a short regency he acceded (1937) to the throne. A constitutional monarch, Farouk was frequently at odds with the Wafd , the largest Egyptian party. Because of his pro-Axis sympathies during World War II, the British imposed upon him a pro-British premier in 1942. General corruption, added to his defeat in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War , eventually led to the military coup of 1952, headed by Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdal Nasser . Farouk was forced to abdicate; he fled the country and found refuge abroad.

Farouk (1920–65) King of Egypt (1936–52). On assuming power he dismissed Prime Minister Nahas Pasha, but was forced by the British government to reinstate him. Farouk's defeat in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1948, together with the general corruption of his reign, led to a military coup in 1952, headed by General Neguib (1901–84) and masterminded by Nasser. Farouk was forced to abdicate in favour of his infant son, Fuad; he was sent into exile and eventually became a citizen of Monaco.

Farouk (1920–65) King of Egypt (1936–52), son of King Fuad I. He alienated many Egyptians by his personal extravagance and corruption. His ambitious foreign policy ended with defeat in the first Arab-Israeli War (1948), and he was overthrown in a military coup led by Gamal Abdel Nasser.
