Ephraim

Ephraim

Ephraim Biblical name, pronounced ‘ee-frame’ borne by one of the sons of Joseph and hence one of the tribes of Israel. The name probably means ‘fruitful’ in Hebrew; it is so explained in the Bible (Genesis 41:52 ‘and the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction’). This was used by the Puritans in the 16th century, but was used more widely in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is still a common Jewish given name.

Ephraim

Ephraim. Younger son of Joseph. According to the midrash, the tribe of Ephraim left slavery in Egypt early, and many were killed by the Philistines. In order to avoid their bones, God led the Israelites a circuitous route to the Promised Land. It was these bones which came to life in Ezekiel's vision of the valley of the dry bones (ch. 37) (B.Sanh 92b).
