Derek Curtis Bok

Derek Curtis Bok 1930-, American educator and university president, b. Bryn Mawr, Pa., grad. Stanford (B.A., 1951) and Harvard (LL.B., 1954). A professor of law at Harvard from 1958, he served as dean of the law school (1968-71), president of the university (1971-91), and interim president (2006-7). He is author of Labor and the American Community (1970), Beyond the Ivory Tower (1984), The State of the Nation (1997), The Trouble with Government (2001), and Universities in the Marketplace (2003).

Curtis Institute, Philadelphia. Sch. of mus. founded and endowed in 1924 by Mrs Mary Louise Bok (later Mrs. Zimbalist) in memory of her father Cyrus H. K. Curtis. Tuition fees abolished 1928. Dir. from 1926 was the pianist Josef Hofmann, who retired 1938, followed by Randall Thompson 1938–40, Efrem Zimbalist 1941–68, Rudolf Serkin 1968–76; John de Lancie 1977–85; Gary Graffman from 1986. Long list of distinguished teachers and visiting professors.
