Davy Jones
Davy Jones, in nautical slang the spirit of the sea, usually cast in the form of a sea devil. ‘This same Davy Jones, according to the mythology of sailors, is the fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep’ ( Tobias Smollett, Peregrine Pickle (1751), ch. XIII). Davy Jones's locker, the bottom of the sea, the final resting place of sunken ships, of articles lost or thrown overboard, of men buried at sea. The phrase also became a seaman's euphemism for death, saying ‘He's gone to Davy Jones's locker’, when someone has been buried at sea. The term is often shortened to Davy.
