Daniel Shays

Daniel Shays , c.1747-1825, American soldier and insurrectionist, b. probably in Hopkinton, Mass. A farmer from W Massachusetts, he fought the British in the American Revolution and was made a captain of the 5th Massachusetts Regiment in 1777. After the war he settled at Pelham, Mass., and became a leader in the revolt of small farmers that resulted from postwar economic depression; the uprising became known as Shays's Rebellion. After the defeat of the insurgents in Feb., 1787, Shays fled to Vermont. He was finally pardoned in June, 1788, and later moved to New York state.

Shays's Rebellion

Shays's Rebellion (1786–87),insurrection of Massachusetts farmers, led by Daniel Shays (1747–1825), a Revolutionary War captain, to stop the foreclosure of mortgages and to prevent the farmers' imprisonment for debts arising from high land taxes after the Revolution. Bellamy's novel The Duke of Stockbridge (1900) deals with this subject.

Shays's Rebellion an uprising by Massachusetts farmers and others led by former Revolutionary War leaders, chief among them Daniel Shays, against the harsh treatment of debtors by the courts in 1786–87. It included an attempt by the rebels to take the federal arsenal near Springfield, which failed.
