Cuddalore

Cuddalore

Cuddalore or Kudalur , city (1991 pop. 144,561), Tamil Nadu state, SE India. It is a port on the Bay of Bengal and a district administrative center, with fishing and shipbuilding industries. Although one of the major ports in India's Tamil Nadu state, Cuddalore handles less than 2% of India's total foreign trade. Fort St. David, a stronghold of Tippoo Sahib, is a notable architectural monument. The city was hit by the Dec., 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami.

Cuddalore

Cuddalore, Tamil Nādu/India Fort St David Settled by the English East India Company in 1682–3. The name is derived from the Tamil kūṭṭal‐ūr ‘Junction Town’, so‐called because it lies close to the confluence of the Ponnaiyār and Gadilam Rivers.
