Christchurch
Christchurch, New Zealand, UK 1. New Zealand (South Island): there is some dispute about the name of the city. It is generally accepted that it was renamed after Christ Church College, Oxford, which is where one of the principal founders, John Robert Godley, of the Church of England Canterbury Association, which founded the original settlement of Canterbury in 1851, was educated. On the other hand, two other principal founders were Cambridge University graduates and it has been suggested that they would not have agreed to call the city after an Oxford college. Since the name Canterbury had become the name of the region, they decided to rename the settlement Christ Church from the dedication of Canterbury Cathedral.2. UK (Dorset/England): lying at the confluence of the Avon and Stour Rivers, it was known formerly as Twynam ‘Place between the Rivers’. It was subsequently renamed Christecerce ‘Church of Christ’ from the Old English Crist and cirice ‘church’.3. There is also a Christ Church in Barbados.

Christchurch
Christchurch city (1996 pop. 309,027), E South Island, New Zealand, on the Avon River. It is the third largest city in New Zealand and the commercial center of the productive Canterbury Plains. Industries include food processing, meatpacking, woolens manufacturing, aquaculture, software development, and electronics; tourism is also important. Lyttelton, nearby, is the port for Christchurch. Perhaps the most English of New Zealand's cities, Christchurch was founded in 1850 and has such landmarks as Hagley Park and the Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals (both damaged severely in 2011). Nicknamed "Garden City of the Plains," it is also distinguished by its many public parks and botanical gardens. The Univ. of Canterbury (est. 1873) is in suburban Ilam. The city suffered severe and widespread damage from earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. |

Christchurch
Christchurch city (1991 pop. 32,854) and district, Dorset, S central England, on Christchurch Bay at the confluence of the Avon and Stour rivers. The city's industries range from aircraft manufacturing to salmon fishing. Christchurch is also a resort. Its history dates back to Anglo-Saxon times; its name derives from the church that was part of the Augustinian priory founded there before the Norman conquest of England. |
