Charles John Canning Canning, Earl

Charles John Canning Canning, Earl 1812–62, British statesman; third son of George Canning. Succeeding to the peerage conferred on his mother, he took his seat as Viscount Canning in the House of Lords (1837) and served as Sir Robert Peel's undersecretary for foreign affairs (1841–46) and Lord Aberdeen's postmaster general (1853–55). Appointed (1856) governor-general of India, he became known as "Clemency Canning" for his efforts to restrain revenge against the Indians during the Indian Mutiny . In 1858, when the power of government was transferred from the East India Company to the British crown, Canning became the first viceroy of India. He was created earl in 1859 and retired in 1862.

Canning, Charles John, Earl

Canning, Charles John, Earl (1812–62) British imperial administrator. Son of George Canning, he served in government before becoming Governor General of India (1856–58). He repressed the Indian Mutiny and followed a policy of conciliation earning him the nickname ‘Clemency Canning’. With the transfer of the government of India to the British Crown, Canning became the first Viceroy of India (1858–62).

Canning, Charles John, 1st Earl Canning

Canning, Charles John, 1st Earl Canning (1812–62) British statesman. The son of George CANNING, he was governor-general of India at the time of the INDIAN MUTINY and played a notable part in the work of reconciliation which followed it. He was subsequently first viceroy of India (1858–62) and was known as “Clemency Canning” for his policy of no retribution.
