Dibdin, Charles
Dibdin, Charles (1745–1814), actor, dramatist, and song-writer, is best remembered for his sea songs, including ‘The Lass that Loved a Sailor’ and ‘Tom Bowling’. He wrote many musical entertainments (including The Waterman, 1774) and dramatic monologues; also an autobiography, The Professional Life of Mr Dibdin… with the Words of Six Hundred Songs (4 vols, 1803), in which he describes his relations with Garrick and others.

Charles Dibdin
Charles Dibdin 1745–1814, English songwriter and theatrical entrepreneur. His best-known songs are from his ballad operas, such as The Bells of Aberdovey from Liberty Hall (1785) and To Bachelors' Hall and Tom Bowling from The Oddities (1789). |
