Ceredigion
Ceredigion county, 694 sq mi (1,797 sq km), W Wales. Ceredigion, corresponding to the former county of Cardiganshire, was established in 1996 when the nonmetropolitan county of Dyfed was dissolved. Cardiganshire (Welsh Sir Ceredigion ) had been joined with Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in 1974 to form Dyfed. |

Ceredigion
Ceredigion. Welsh name for Cardiganshire, a former maritime country of Wales, since 1974 part of Dyfed. In the 8th century Ceredigion joined with Ystrad Tywi to form the kingdom of Seissyllwg. Named for Ceredigion, a son of Cunedda. A notable 9th-century king was Arthen.
