Castries

Castries , town (1991 pop. 11,147; 1991 metropolitan area pop. 51,994), capital and commercial center of Saint Lucia . Its excellent landlocked harbor is one of the best in the West Indies. Castries was founded by the French in 1650. The secretariat for the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States is located there.

St Lucia Volcanic island in the Windward group, West Indies; the capital is Castries (2002 pop. 60,200). The island changed hands 14 times between France and Britain before being ceded to Britain in 1814. It finally achieved full self-government in 1979. Mountainous, lush and forested, its tourist income is growing rapidly, especially from cruise ships. The principal export crop is bananas. Area: 616sq km (238sq mi). Pop. (2000) 177,000.
