Carina

Carina [Lat.,=the keel], southern constellation , representing the keel of the ancient constellation Argo Navis, or Ship of the Argonauts. Carina contains Canopus , the second brightest star in the sky. It also contains the False Cross, a combination of four stars very similar to the Southern Cross (see Crux ); however, the long axis of the False Cross does not point toward the south celestial pole. In 1843 a nova was observed in Carina. Carina reaches its highest point in the evening sky in March.

Carina (abbr. Car, gen. Carinae) A southern constellation representing the keel of the ship Argo Navis. It contains the second-brightest star in the sky, Canopus (Alpha Carinae). Another bright star is Beta Carinae (Miaplacidus). Eta Carinae is a unique variable star embedded in the nebula NGC 3372. Major star clusters include NGC 2516 and NGC 3532, and also IC 2602, sometimes called the Southern Pleiades.

Ca·ri·na / kəˈrēnə; -ˈrī-/ Astron. a southern constellation (the Keel) partly in the Milky Way, originally part of Argo. It contains the second brightest star in the sky, Canopus. ∎ [as genitive] (Ca·ri·nae / -nē/ ) used with a preceding letter or numeral to designate a star in this constellation: the star Beta Carinae.
