metastasis (mi-tas-tă-sis) n. (pl. metastases) the distant spread of disease, especially a malignant tumour, from its site of origin. This occurs by three main routes: (1) through the bloodstream; (2) through the lymphatic system; (3) across body cavities.

metastasis Transfer of disease from one part of the body to another. The term is most commonly used in relation to tumours, when cancerous cells from the primary tumour break away, are carried in the blood or lymph, and lodge elsewhere, where a secondary tumour then forms.
