Canberra , city (1991 pop. 276,162), capital of Australia, in the Australian Capital Territory , SE Australia. The Canberra urban agglomeration includes a small area in New South Wales. The federal government is the largest employer in Canberra; there are also printing and service industries. The site chosen (1908) for the capital city was first settled in 1824. In 1913, Canberra officially became the second capital of the commonwealth (succeeding Melbourne ); however, although the Parliament first met there in 1927, the transfer of federal functions was not completed until after World War II and the striking Parliament House, on Capitol Hill, was not opened until 1988. The city was planned by the American architect Walter Burley Griffin. In 2003 parts of Canberra were ravaged by drought-intensified wildfires; the facilities of Mount Stromlo Observatory were among the buildings destroyed. Canberra is the seat of the Duntroon Royal Military College, Australian National Univ., the National Gallery, the Australian War Memorial, the National Library, the National Museum of Australia, the Academy of Science, and other research and scientific institutions.

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory/Australia Kamberra/Kambery, Yass‐Canberra Originally a small settlement with a name derived from an Aboriginal word nganbirra ‘meeting place’. A capital city was required for the Commonwealth of Australia when it was created in 1901. With Melbourne and Sydney both claiming to be Australia's pre‐eminent city, it was decided to build a new capital. The site was chosen in 1909 and in 1927 Canberra was inaugurated as the capital. Settled in the early 1820s, it was chosen in 1908 as the new site for Australia's capital (succeeding Melbourne). The transfer of all governmental agencies was not completed until after World War II. Canberra has the Australian National University (1946), Royal Australian Mint (1965), Royal Military College and Stromlo Observatory. The new Parliament House opened in 1988. Other important buildings include the National Library, National Museum, and National Gallery. Pop. (2002 est.) 315,400.

Canberra B-57 a twin-jet aircraft used by the Air Force for more than twenty-five years, starting in the Korean War. It was a nuclear and conventional weapons platform and also used for reconnaissance, weather, and electronic countermeasures.
