Canaan
Canaan, Canada, Tobago, USA These towns are all named after the ancient name for western Palestine, the land promised to the children of Israel, the ‘Promised Land’. The origin of the word is unknown. However, it may be derived from a Semitic word signifying ‘reddish purple’, a reference to the purple dye made in the area or to the wool made with such dye. Alternatively, it has also been suggested that it may come from kana ‘to be low’ or ‘humble’, thus ‘lowlands’. The ancient region was called Retinu by the Egyptian pharaohs. The Phoenicians' name for themselves may have been Kena'ani ‘Canaanites’; the secondary meaning of the Hebrew kena'ani ‘merchant’ well describes the Phoenicians. In the Bible (Genesis 9: 18) a man, Canaan, is said to be the son of Ham and the grandson of Noah. See Lebanon.

Canaan(ites)
Canaan(ites) The Promised Land. The extent of Canaan, composed of independent towns and villages before the domination of the Israelites, comprised what is now modern Israel and Lebanon. Agriculture was the main occupation, and this was reflected in the harvest festivals, which Israel inherited (Exod. 23: 14–17). But much of Canaanite religion and morality was decisively repudiated by the conquering Israelites according to the Deuteronomist historian (Deut. 20: 16–18), whose narrative was prejudiced, polemical, and partial.
In the NT the land is mentioned in Stephen's speech (Acts 7: 11), and where Mark (7: 26) refers to a Syro-Phoenician woman, Matthew (15: 22) calls her a Canaanite, which is a simplification of the more precise Marcan term, and also carries rather derogatory overtones. See also Tyre. |

Canaan
Canaan . 1 According to biblical ethnography, Canaan was the son of Ham and the ancestor for whom the Canaanites were named. 2 Territory, the same as ancient Palestine, lying between the Jordan, the Dead Sea, and the Mediterranean and sometimes including Transjordan. It was the Promised Land of the Israelites, and after their delivery from Egypt they subjugated it. The land held a number of pre-Israelite peoples listed in several passages in the Bible. See Ugarit ; Asherah ; Baal ; Philistia ; Phoenicia . |
