Caliban

Caliban

Caliban A retrograde satellite of Uranus, sixteenth in order from the planet at a distance of 7 231 000 km; also known as Uranus XVI. It orbits every 579.7 days at an inclination of over 140° to Uranus' equator. Caliban has a diameter of about 60 km and was discovered in 1997.

Caliban in Shakespeare's The Tempest, the brutish and degraded son of the witch Sycorax, who has been forced to serve Prospero; in contrast to the ‘airy spirit’ Ariel, he typifies a gross and animal nature. His name may represent either ‘Carib’ or ‘cannibal’.
