Westcott, Brooke Foss (1825–1901) English NT scholar. As a professor in Cambridge, he wrote three commentaries, notably one on the gospel of John, and together with Fenton Hort published an edition of the Greek NT taking into account all the available evidence; this then served as the basis for the English Revised Version of 1881. Westcott became bishop of Durham and evinced a deep concern for the welfare of miners.
