British Isles

British Isles

British Isles Group of islands off the nw coast of Europe, made up of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. It also includes the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea (a self-governing island but part of the United Kingdom); and the Channel Islands in the English Channel (a self-governing crown dependency).

British Isles

British Isles Until 1949 a collective title for Great Britain, Ireland, and the numerous islands surrounding the two larger islands, including the Isle of Man. In 1949 the Republic of Ireland left the British Commonwealth and so could no longer be included in the title.
