Bridgetown

Bridgetown

Bridgetown city (1990 pop. 5,928), capital, commercial center, and chief port of Barbados , West Indies. It is, in addition, a tourist and health resort. Sugar, rum, and molasses are the leading exports, and Bridgetown also serves as an important financial center and transshipment point. The city was founded by the British in 1628.

Bridgetown, Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, USA Barbados: the capital of Barbados was founded in 1628 and renamed in the 19th century in recognition of the bridge built by Carlisle Bay. Its former names were Indian Bridge and St Michael's Town.

Bridgetown Capital and port of Barbados, in the West Indies. Founded in 1628, it is the seat of the parliament and has a college of the University of the West Indies. Industries: rum distilling, sugar processing, tourism. Pop. (2000) 97,500.
