Brandon
Brandon, usually ‘hill where broom grows’, OE brōm + dūn: Brandon Durham. Bromdune c.1190. Brandon Northum. Bremdona c.1150, Bromdun 1236. Here the first element alternates with OE *brēmen ‘broomy’. Brandon Suffolk. Bromdun 11th cent., Brandona 1086 (DB). Brandon Warwicks. Brandune 1086 (DB). Brandon Parva Norfolk. Brandun 1086 (DB).
However the following may have a different origin: Brandon Lincs. Branthon 1060–6, Brandune 1086 (DB). Probably ‘hill by the River Brant’. OE river-name (from OE brant ‘steep, deep’) + dūn. |

Brandon
Brandon ♂ Transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from any of various places so called, most of which get their name from Old English brōm ‘broom, gorse’ + dūn ‘hill’. In some cases it may be an altered form of Brendan. There has perhaps also been some influence from the surname of the Italian American actor Marlon Brando (1924–2004). In Britain the name has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity since the mid-1990s.
Variants: Brandan, Branden, Brandyn. |
