Brabant

Brabant

Brabant (Flemish: Braband), BelgiumBrachant A former province possibly named after Silvius Brabo (see Antwerp). However, it is also possible that the name comes from the Old High German bracha ‘new land’ or ‘land prepared for tillage’ and bant ‘region’ to give ‘Ploughed Area’. It was divided into Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant on 1 January 1995. Earlier still, it comprised the southern part of the Duchy of Brabant; this was split in two during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648), the northern part going to the Dutch. North Brabant is a province of The Netherlands.
