Borneo
Borneo (Indonesian: Kalimantan), Brunei‐Indonesia‐Malaysia The island of Borneo comprises the Sultanate of Brunei, the two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and Indonesian Kalimantan, although the Indonesians use this name for the whole island. Kalimantan is the Malay name for the indigenous inhabitants. The name kāliman ‘blackness’ itself is taken from the Sanskrit kāli ‘black’ and the Malay tanah ‘land’. On the other hand, it is also claimed that kalimantan is a species of wild mango which would give a name of ‘Island of Wild Mangoes’. Because of the diamond field near Martapura, Kalimantan is sometimes translated as ‘River of Diamonds’. ‘Borneo’ is a Portuguese mispronunciation of Brunei, the capital city on the island when it became known to Europeans in the 16th century. Some people in Sarawak (the major part of the non‐Indonesian part of the island) maintain that ‘Borneo’ comes from the Malay buah nyior ‘coconut’. The Dutch established predominance in the south during the 18th century while the British moved into the north. The southern two‐thirds became a Dutch colony in 1863.
