Black Death An epidemic of catastrophic proportions, the Black Death first struck England in the summer of 1348. This first outbreak probably killed between a third and a half of the population, as is shown by figures showing death rates for the clergy, and for peasant landholders. It is usually considered to have been bubonic plague, spread by fleas and rats. The Black Death had major economic effects, although these did not become fully apparent until the 1370s. The area under arable cultivation was sharply reduced and some lands were turned over to pasture. Labour became more expensive, and attempts to revive peasant labour services were unsuccessful.
