Bendigo
Bendigo , city (1991 pop. 57,427), Victoria, SE Australia. Founded in 1851 during the gold rush, Bendigo was the center for the greatest goldfield in Victoria. Mining continues, but the city is now an industrial, railroad, tourist, and commercial center in a livestock and dairy-farming region. Textiles, bricks, and pottery are manufactured in Bendigo. |

Bendigo, Victoria/Australia Sandhurst Founded in 1840 and renamed in 1891 after a local boxer who compared himself to a well‐known English boxer, William Thompson, whose nickname was Bendigo.
