Ben Nevis. A mountain in the Scottish Highlands (until 1974, Inverness-shire), 5 miles ESE of Fort William, the highest peak in the British Isles, 4, 406 feet, 24 miles in circumference at the base, often cited in Scottish Gaelic narrative. The folk etymologies, beinn neamh bhathais, ‘mountain with head in clouds’ or ‘sky-touching peak’, and others purporting to mean ‘venomous one’ or ‘terrible’ seem fanciful; it is more likely that the Ben was named for a nearby stream, also still called Nevis [water (?)].
