Belmopan
Belmopan , city (1993 est. pop. 3,900), E Belize, capital of Belize . A new city, it was constructed on the Belize R., 50 mi (80 km) inland from the former capital of then British Honduras, the port of Belize City , after that city's near destruction by a hurricane in 1961. The government was moved to Belmopan in 1970. The National Assembly Building's design is based on an ancient Mayan motif. |

Belmopan
Belmopan, Belize Following the destruction of Belize City in 1961, a new town was built 50 miles (80 km) inland, officially becoming the capital in 1972. It takes its name from the first syllables of Belize and Mopan, the tributary of the Belize River on which it lies, and the name of an indigenous tribe that successfully resisted Spanish attempts at subjugation.

Belmopan
Belmopan Capital of Belize, on the River Belize. It replaced Belize City, 80km (50mi) upstream, as capital in 1970, the latter having been largely destroyed by a hurricane in 1961. The building of Belmopan began in 1966. Pop. (2000) 8130.
