Belgrade
Belgrade (Beograd), Serbia and Montenegro, USA Serbia and Montenegro (Serbia): ‘formerly Singidunum, Beli Grad, Dar ul Jihad, and Weissenburg. White City’ from beo and grad; in Turkish, ‘House of the Holy Wars’. The Romans named it the ‘Fort of the Singi’, a Celtic fort, dunum, having been built in the 4th century bc Later, according to legend, it was named after the white bluff at the confluence of the Rivers Danube and Sava. It came under Serb rule for the first time in 1284, becoming the capital of Serbia in 1404. It was seized by the Ottoman Turks in 1521 and changed hands several times between them and the Austrians during the 17th and 18th centuries. The city was liberated by the Serbs in 1806, becoming the capital again in 1839. Liberated from the Austrians in 1918, the city became the capital of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes when that country was created in 1918, of Yugoslavia when that name was adopted in 1929, and of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003 when the name Yugoslavia was superseded.
