Beja, Portugal, Tunisia Portugal: a district and town, its present name is a corrupted form of its first Roman name, Pax Iulia. This was followed by Pax Augusta and Colonia Pacensis. All the Roman names are connected with ‘peace’, that is, the town's pacification during the times of Julius Caesar and Augustus; in particular, Caesar's peace treaty with the Lusitanians which ended their resistance to Roman rule.
