battle Battle Abbey an abbey founded by William the Conqueror near the site of the Battle of Hastings, in fulfilment of his vow before the battle that he would build an abbey if he achieved victory. The church was consecrated in 1094.
Battle Hymn of the Republic the title of Julia Ward Howe's poem, which became one of the most popular songs of the Union forces during the American Civil War, is said to have been suggested to her by the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, J. T. Fields, when both were visiting the Union troops in 1861. The ‘Battle Hymn’ was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in February, 1862. See also Battle of Britain, Battle of the Bulge. |

Battle
Battle, England/UK La Batailge ‘(Place of) the Battle’. It is named after the Battle of Hastings between the English and Normans, which took place here, some 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Hastings, in 1066. An abbey was first built here to commemorate the battle. According to tradition, the high altar of the abbey marked the spot where Harold II (c.1020–66), the last Anglo‐Saxon King of England (1066), placed his standards.

Battle
Battle town, East Sussex, SE England. The town grew up on the site (then a moorland) of the battle of Hastings (1066). The victorious William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey to commemorate the event. The abbey has been converted into a girls' school, but ruins can be seen. |
