Bandar Seri Begawan

Bandar Seri Begawan , city (1991 est. pop. 46,229), capital and chief port of the sultanate of Brunei, of which it is also the business and commercial center. Its manufactures include furniture, textiles, handicrafts, and building materials. Petroleum and natural gas are processed there. It is the site of the Royal Ceremonial Hall and the Brunei History Center. It was formerly called Brunei.

Bandar Seri Begawan (formerly Brunei Town) Capital of Brunei, Borneo, se Asia. The town port was superseded in 1972 by a new deepwater harbour at Maura. The capital includes the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Masjid, se Asia's largest mosque. Pop. (1995 est.) 46,000.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Brunei Town ‘Distinguished Port’ from bandar and seri begawan ‘distinguished’ or honoured'. It was renamed in 1970 in honour of the sultan's father, Sir Omar Ali Saifuddin, sultan (1950–67), who had abdicated in 1967. Capital of the Sultanate of Brunei.
