awash

a·wash / əˈwôsh; əˈwäsh/ • adj. covered or flooded with water, esp. seawater or rain: the boat rolled violently, its decks awash | fig. the city was awash with journalists. ∎  level with the surface of water, esp. the sea, so that it just washes over: a rock awash outside the reef entrance.

Awash

Awash , river, E Ethiopia, rising near Addis Ababa and flowing c.500 mi (800 km) to a swampy lake near the Djibouti border. The Awash Valley is important agriculturally and has hydroelectric plants. A game reserve and national park lie along the river. The name is also spelled Hawash.

awash, the situation of an object almost submerged, as when seas wash over a shipwreck or shoal, or when a ship lies so low in the water that the seas wash over it. A falling tide which exposes a rock or bank which is submerged at high water makes it awash.
