Augusta , city (1991 pop. 34,189), E Sicily, Italy, on an island (formerly a peninsula) in the Ionian Sea, connected by bridge with the Sicilian mainland. It is a leading port and a fishing and industrial center. Manufactures include refined petroleum, petrochemicals, textiles, and fertilizer. The city was a Greek settlement and then a Roman military base. It was refounded by Emperor Frederick II in 1232 and later (15th-early 16th cent.) was a thriving banking town. Augusta was badly damaged by earthquakes in 1693 and 1848. Of note is Frederick II's castle (now a penitentiary).

Augusta, Australia, Italy, USA 1. Italy (Sicily): founded in 1232 by Frederick II and called by him Augusta Veneranda to mean ‘August (Place)’, that is, a place to be venerated or revered.2. USA (Georgia): founded as a trading post in 1735 and named after Princess Augusta (1719–72), the mother of the future George III.3. USA (Maine): originally with a Native American name, Koussinoc, a fort was built here in 1754. In 1797 the town which had developed from it was called Harrington, but this was almost immediately changed to Augusta after Pamela Augusta, the daughter of General Henry Dearborn (1751–1829), army officer, congressman, and secretary for war (1801–9).
