Arthur Rubinstein

Arthur Rubinstein 1887-1983, Polish-American pianist, b. Łódź. Rubinstein studied in Warsaw and Berlin, making his debut in 1900 with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Joachim. He first played in the United States in 1906, achieving great acclaim there in 1937, especially for his superb lyric interpretations of Chopin's music and his ardent championship of Spanish works. Rubinstein's enormous popularity spanned many decades.

Rubinstein, Arthur (1887–1982) US pianist, b. Poland. He made his début with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in 1901. Rubinstein first played in the USA in 1906 and became famous for his interpretations of Chopin and Spanish composers.

Rubinstein, Arthur [Artur] (b Lódź, 1887; d Geneva, 1982). Polish-born pianist (Amer. cit. 1946). Child prodigy, giving recital in Warsaw at age 5. Studied there with Rozycki, then taken by mother to Berlin to play for Joachim. Studied at Warsaw Cons., then aged 10 again sent to Berlin where Joachim, with 3 others, paid for his mus. training with Heinrich Barth (pf., comp., and theory). Played Mozart A major conc. (K488), cond. Joachim, Berlin 1900. First visited USA 1906. London début 1912. Settled in Paris but was in London 1914 and, speaking 8 languages fluently, became wartime interpreter. Gave recitals for charity with violinist Ysaÿe. Had great success in Spain 1916, becoming noted exponent of Falla's mus. Played frequently in USA 1919–27 but did not gain full success there until 1937. Settled in Hollywood 1939. Gave first post-war recital in Poland 1958 and visited Russ. 1964, but refused to return to Ger. Among greatest pianists of 20th cent., a master in the classics, in Chopin, and in 20th-cent. repertory. Played with almost undiminished power and skill up to his 90th birthday. Last London recital 30 Apr. 1976. Hon. KBE 1977.
