Machen, Arthur Llewellyn
Machen, Arthur Llewellyn (1863–1947), son of a Welsh clergyman, was deeply influenced by the Welsh landscape, and local folklore. He translated The Heptameron (1886) and The Memoirs of Casanova (1894) and began writing the mystic, supernatural tales of evil and horror for which he is best remembered. They include The Great God Pan (1894), The Hill of Dreams (1907), and The Three Impostors (1895). Other works include Hieroglyphics (1902, criticism); and Far off Things (1922) and Things Near and Far (1923), both autobiographical.

Arthur Machen
Arthur Machen , 1863–1947, British author, b. Wales. He wrote a series of semiautobiographical fantasies, notably The Hill of Dreams (1907) and Far Off Things (1922), and tales of horror and the supernatural. Machen achieved transient fame during World War I with "The Bowman," a tale relating how St. George and his ghostly archers rescue the British army and slaughter the Germans.
