Anton van Diemen

Anton van Diemen

Anton van Diemen , 1593–1645, Dutch colonial official. As governor-general for the Dutch East India Company in the East Indies after 1636, he captured Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Malacca from the Portuguese. He sent Abel Tasman on exploring voyages. Tasman called an island that he found (1642) Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).

Van Diemen's Land

Van Diemen's Land Original name of Tasmania. Discovered (1642) by Abel Tasman, it was named in honour of the governor general of the Dutch East Indies. It became part of New South Wales in 1803, was made a separate colony in 1825, given self-government in 1850, and named Tasmania in 1855.
