Ann Arbor city (1990 pop. 109,592), seat of Washtenaw co., S Mich., on the Huron River; inc. 1851. It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as aerospace and nuclear research. Educational facilities include the Univ. of Michigan and Concordia College. Industries include printing and publishing and the manufacture of electronic, medical, and transportation equipment and precision machinery. The city is also a medical center; in addition to the university hospitals and medical school, it has a community hospital and a neuropsychiatric hospital. The university has museums of art, natural science, and archaeology and a botanical garden.
