Anaconda
Anaconda , city (1990 pop. 10,278), seat of Deer Lodge co., SW Mont.; inc. 1887. Marcus Daly chose this place (1883) for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's processing operations, and in the 1890s tried unsuccessfully to make it Montana's capital. The city's famed high-stacked smelter was closed in 1980 as the copper industry declined. Tourism, spurred by a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course (1997), is now important. |

anaconda Large, constricting boa of South America, the longest (up to 9m/30ft) and heaviest (up to 500kg/1100lb) snake in the world. Anacondas are mainly aquatic. They feed on birds and small mammals. Females give birth to up to 75 live young. Species Eunectes murinus. See also python

Anaconda
Anaconda, Montana/USA Copperopolis The creator of Montana's copper industry, Marcus Daly, an Irish immigrant, added polis to copper when founding the town in 1883. It was renamed Anaconda in 1888 after Daly set up the Anaconda Company to produce copper.
