Albert
Albert 1490–1545, German churchman, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A member of the house of Brandenburg, he became (1514) Archbishop of Mainz. Because Albert was underage, this appointment was uncanonical and he was required to pay a large fee for a papal dispensation. To assist Albert in raising this sum, the pope authorized an eight-year sale of indulgences. Albert authorized (1517) Johann Tetzel to preach this indulgence—occasioning Martin Luther's public protest against indulgences. A patron of Ulrich von Hutten , Albert was expected to join the Reformers, but after 1525 he actively opposed them. Later he invited the Jesuits to preach in his diocese. He was a friend of Erasmus. |

Albert
Albert ♂ From an Old French name, Albert, of Germanic (Frankish) origin, derived from adal ‘noble’ + berht ‘bright, famous’. This was adopted by the Normans and introduced by them to England, displacing the Old English form Æþelbeorht. The name is popular in a variety of forms in Western Europe, and has been traditional in a number of European princely families. It was out of favour in England for centuries, however, and the revival of its popularity in the 19th century was largely in honour of Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Albert, Australia, Canada, France, USA 1. France (Picardy): named after Albert, Duc de Lynes, who acquired the area some time after 1619. The current pretender to the non‐existent French throne, the Comte de Paris, also has the title Marquis d'Albert.2. USA (South Dakota): named after J. J. Abert, a colonel in the US Army; his name was misspelt Albert.
