Ai

Ai

Ai.
1. Love in Mo Tzu's system, usually in the form chien ai, universal love. Universal love is in a different category from jen, being more related to utilitarian considerations: altruism has benefits running in both directions.

2. In Japanese Buddhism, ai (lust as well as love) is fundamental desire which may go in either of two opposite directions. It may become self-interested and self-satisfying, or, it may be self-denying and disinterested in the pursuit of the good of another, and is thus supremely the love of a buddha or bodhisattva, a transfigured love.

Ai

Ai , in the Bible. 1 Canaanite royal city, E of Bethel. Abraham pitched his tent there when he arrived in Canaan. It is probably the modern et-Tell, near Bethel (West Bank). Excavations have revealed a strongly fortified city situated there. Ai was in ruins at the time of Joshua's conquest. The account in chapter 7 of the Book of Joshua possibly refers instead to Bethel 1, whose people may have used the nearby ruins of Ai as a bastion against the invading Israelites. It also appears as Hai, Aiath, and Aija. 2 City of the Ammorites, near Heshbon.

Ai

Ai A small town or village captured by Joshua probably about 1125 BCE; but the scale of the operation is much exaggerated in the account of Josh. 8 and seems to be an attempt to extol the military prowess of the Hebrews. It is also suggested, in the absence of any undisputed archaeological confirmation, that the account was compiled as an explanation of a well-known ruin—which is the meaning of the word in Hebrew—and has no historical basis.
