Adam's Bridge

Adam's Bridge or Rama's Bridge , chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long, SW Palk Strait , between India and island nation of Sri Lanka. At high tide it is covered by c.4 ft (1.2 m) of water, forcing oceangoing vessels to travel around Sri Lanka instead of through the Palk Strait. According to Hindu tradition, the bridge was built to transport Rama, hero of the Ramayana , to the island to rescue his wife from the demon king Ravanna. A proposed ship channel through the Palk Strait and Adam's Bridge has been protested by devout Hindus and environmentalists.

Adam's Bridge or Rāma's Bridge. The chain of small islands linking S. India to N. Śri Lankā, which could be crossed on foot until the 15th cent., when storms widened the gaps. According to Rāmāyaṇa, Hanumān built the link to enable Rāma to cross and rescue Sītā. According to Muslim tradition, Adam crossed here after his expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

Bridges-Adams, William (1889–1965), English director, who gained his experience in provincial repertory companies, including the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, before in 1919 he was appointed director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in succession to Frank Benson. There he directed 29 plays by Shakespeare and was instrumental in keeping the company together after the building was destroyed by fire in 1926, remaining with it until after it moved into the new theatre in 1932. He took the company several times on tour to Canada and the USA. After leaving Stratford in 1934 he worked with the British Council, initiating the policy of sending theatrical companies abroad, mostly to Europe.
