AB
AB, the abbreviated title for the rating of able seaman, indicating someone able to perform all the duties of a seaman on board ship. In the days of sail it was someone who could hand, reef, and steer, but today he or she must have many more maritime skills than that. The initials have been thought to refer to an ‘able-bodied’ seaman, but this is not so: they are merely the first two letters of ‘able’.

AbSemitic magical month. Crossing a river on the twentieth of that month was supposed to bring sickness. Ancient texts state that if a man should eat the flesh of swine on the thirtieth day of Ab, he will be plagued with boils. Ab is also an ancient Egyptian term for the heart. Since the heart was the seat of the conscience, its preservation was a crucial part of the mummification process. |
